Friday Favorites 8/22

Happy Friday, everyone!!

Man, I was ready for Friday this week. I don’t know why, I mean, it was a good week. I think I’m just super excited for tomorrow, so that made the week drag. Why am I excited for tomorrow, you ask? Because my friend, Erica and I are going to a Barre workout in the park in Portland! Barre3, a studio in Portland, is celebrating their 6 year anniversary with a Barre3 In The Park event. I’ve been wanting to try a barre workout for awhile now, but our gym doesn’t offer it so I haven’t had a chance. To be honest, I’m not entirely sure what barre is, but I think it has a Pilates-esque feel with a focus on flexibility, strength and balance. It just seems like it would be something I’d like. 🙂 I’ll have a more complete and accurate description after I attend the event.

If you’re in the Portland area, you should come! It’s free! 🙂 Their Facebook page has all the details.

Now, for one of the reasons I look forward to Fridays (besides the fact that it’s Friday, duh), this week’s edition of Friday Favorites!! As always, thanks to the lovely Heather over at Housewife Glamour for the linkup!!

JIF Salted Caramel Hazelnut Spread

My mom bought me a jar of this spread because she thought I might like it (can’t imagine why). JIF + chocolate = Whit’s happy place. This stuff is delicious! Seriously, I’ve been guilty of eating it by the spoonfuls all week, and I’ve even caught Brandon with a spoon in it a time or ten. It was really yummy on toast and I’d like to try it on pancakes too, but I’m all out. (Mom, are you reading this? I need a refill! … Totally kidding.)

PGroup Workouts

It’s no secret that I love group exercise. I wouldn’t teach it if I didn’t. I love it because it’s so much more fun and motivating to workout with other people. I’m way less likely to quit if there are others in the room and I love that we can push one another and feed off of each other’s energy. This week at work, we hosted an group workout event. It was a fun run/obstacle course-like event. We started with a dunk tank. For each time we missed dunking the person in the tank, we had to do a burpee. Then we ran uphill 2 miles through a neighborhood to another challenge where we had to roll dice to see how many weighted squats we had to do. We ended at a local restaurant and bar where we had to do keg presses with empty beer kegs, then walking lunges while holding a slosh pipe. Phew! After that, we were rewarded with food and beer! It was cool to see our gym and the local restaurant come together to put on an active event with healthy food (minus the beer). The photo is of me and my team doing the event as part of a fitness challenge we have at the gym.

I have a water bottle that says “fitness” in big letters in the front. This week, one of my sneaky coworkers decided to change the “fitness” to “fatness.” The sad part is that I didn’t even notice until the next day!

Chocolate Shop Chocolate Sparkling Wine

Brandon brought this home the other day and, I gotta say, I was a little hesitant. I’m not a huge red wine fan and I’ve had chocolate wines before that aren’t all they’re cracked up to be. This stuff, though, was fantastic!!! We poured ourselves each a glass and then took the rest over to our neighbor’s house one night. We shared it with them while we all watched some satellites. Our neighbor has an app that tracks satellites in the sky and they were supposed to be bright that night. I’m not much of a star (or satellite) gazer, but it was nice to sit out and enjoy the evening, wine and good company.

Well, those are my faves from the week! Your turn!

Tell me some of your favorite things about your week!

What are you looking forward to this weekend?

Has anyone done a barre workout?

Centergy And A Smoothie

It’s my Friday!! … Oh, sorry. Maybe I shouldn’t brag about that. Hope y’all have an awesome Friday tomorrow! 🙂

I’ve been teaching a lot of Group Centergy this week because we’ve needed substitute instructors pretty badly lately. We don’t have a ton of instructors on our Centergy team, so I subbed out my Cardio30 classes to cover some Centergy classes. I’ve enjoyed teaching Centergy, but I’ve missed my Cardio30 class. I feel bad leaving my participants for a week. I think I’ll bring them a treat on Monday!

Lucy loves to help me practice Centergy.

After class yesterday, I came home and tried a new protein smoothie recipe. I’ve mentioned before, I love Drink Click protein powder and they have some yummy recipes on their website. The CLICK’n Double Caramel Protein Smoothie looked particularly tasty, so I made that yesterday.

You really should check out the picture on the Drink Click website because their photo looks wayyyy better than mine. The recipe can be found here. I tried of drizzle dulce de leche on top to make it pretty, but it just sunk.

I made a few tweaks to the recipe. The original recipe calls for almond milk and I used soy because that’s what I had on hand. It also calls for Dannon Greek yogurt in caramel macchiato flavor, which I didn’t have (but I WOULD had I known it existed!! Put it on my grocery list!), so I used vanilla Greek yogurt and a scoop of dulce de leche that a friend from Uruguay gave me. It reminded me of a blended caramel latte, but healthier! I’m totally going to make it when I’m craving a blended latte.

Tonight, I’m going to take a cardio class at the gym with a friend so I don’t die when I teach Cardio30 again on Monday.

I’m linking up with Katie for her Healthy Habits linkup today. She has some great tips for getting out of a funk! Anybody else fall into a funk once and awhile and just don’t know why? No? Just me? Well, just in case you ever do, check out Katie’s post! 🙂

How’s your week been?

Having A Cup Of Java With Juli!

Happy Monday!!
I love my weekends, but there are a few things I really look forward to when a new week rolls around: teaching Cardio30 on Monday morning and a new Java with Juli podcast.

If you’ve not heard of Java with Juli, it’s a podcast that discusses women’s questions about marriage and relationships from a biblical perspective. Dr. Juli Slattery and author, Linda Dillow, chat openly about the everything from dealing with in-laws to sex in marriage, all from a Bible-based, God-honoring perspective. They actually record the podcast in a coffee shop in Colorado, so you can hear coffee beans being ground, milk steaming and the tinkling of coffee cups hitting the table after someone takes a sip. It’s like you’re actually sitting down with Juli and Linda in a coffee shop having a genuine discussion about marriage and relationships. I usually listen to it in the car, but when I have time, I love to brew my own cuppa joe and sit down to enjoy some girl talk.

I love this podcast especially because Juli and Linda aren’t afraid to touch the tough topics that church and your typical women’s Bible study address. I grew up going to church and a Christian school, so I’ve heard the basics: marriage is for life, don’t have sex until you’re married, wives are to respect their husbands and husbands are to love their wives, two become one, but there’s not a lot of real talk about intimacy in marriage. Is it okay to enjoy sex? What if you don’t? What if one or both of you had sex before marriage, can your sexual life be redeemed? What if he struggles with pornography? What if you think lustful thoughts about Ryan Gosling? I feel like these kinds of questions generally aren’t approached in Christian circles and if we want answers, we have to go to Cosmo magazine or watch chick flicks to get them. Java with Juli approaches these tough questions tactfully and Biblically and I love listening to their candid conversations and “bold truths,” as their slogan says.

This week’s podcast in entitled “When The Honeymoon Is Over” and it discusses what to do when marriage doesn’t meet your expectations.

Did you know that 20% of marriages end in the first 5 years? 20%! That’s a large percentage for a relatively short time of marriage and it’s extremely sad that so many couples are unhappy with marriage so soon after getting married. As a relatively newly married lady myself (we’re almost 3 years in), I can attest that marriage isn’t always what I thought it’d be. Sometimes it’s hard, oftentimes it’s waaaaay different than I envisioned, and every day I realize I’m more selfish than I ever knew. Does that mean I married the wrong man? Did I make a mistake? Juli, Linda and Comminications Coordinator, Hannah do an excellent job of hashing out how to respond when marriage is different than you anticipated. I encourage you to take a listen. You can find today’s podcast here

And if you love Java with Juli, which I think you will, there are dozens more great podcasts to listen to here or, you can do what I do and add Java with Juli to your podcast app on your iPhone and get them loaded directly to your phone each Monday! Java with Juli is a part of Authentic Intimacy, a ministry designed to bring God’s truth into the emotional, physical and spiritual aspects of intimacy. I’ve mentioned the ministry once before in this post. The Authentic Intimacy website is a great resource for marriage advice, encouragement and inspiration. Check it out here!

Hope you all have a fantastic week!

Have you heard of Java with Juli or Authentic Intimacy?

What are you looking forward to this week?

Friday Favorites 8/15/14

Happy Friday!! And a happy birthday to my bro-in-law today!

I’m currently spending my Friday waiting for my tires to be rotated, so I figured what better way to pass the time than reminiscing on my faves from the week?? I’m linking up with Heather over at Housewife Glamour for her Friday Favorites link up.

And there’s quite a bit of healthy in my faves this week, so I’m linking up with Katie’s Healthy Habits link up too!

Panera’s Strawberry Poppyseed Chicken Salad

I went out to lunch with my grandma today (hi grandma!!) and got this amazing salad with a side of soup. It’s seriously so good! Strawberries, blueberries, mandarin oranges, pineapple, mmmm… Tastes like summer!! We had something similar on our nutrition plan at work a few weeks ago with a homemade clean poppyseed dressing. Nom nom. I can’t decide which I like better. At least now I know when I go out to eat there’s a delicious healthy option to choose.

Group Power

I’ve been taking Group Power again and love it! I used to take it twice a week, but then my work schedule changed and now the only class that fits in my schedule is Friday mornings. I love my Cardio30 and Centergy, but have been wanting to add back a strength training option. Group Power, I’ve missed you!

I love KIND bars and recently found this variation. They’re so tasty and, if you get them at Wal Mart instead of the health food store, they’re not too expensive. I like to keep one in my purse or desk in case I ever need a snack.

Fresh Flowers

Brandon brought me these beauties for no reason at all. They make me smile every time I see them on my kitchen table. Lucy loves them too!! Well, she loves to eat them.

What about you? What are some of your favorites from this week?

Any fun weekend plans? We’re going out to celebrate my bro-in-law’s birthday tonight then we have a baby shower on Sunday.

The Best Cure For The Mondays

Happy Monday!!!

Even after a 3 day weekend, I gotta say I wasn’t quite ready for my alarm to signal the start of a new week. I taught Cardio30 this morning and that pumped me up for a little while, but I hit a roadblock early afternoon and just did not want to do anything. Ya ever have those days?

Step #1 to curing a case of “the Mondays,” is COFFEE.

Step #2: Watch these adorable animal videos.
I found quite a few cute animal videos on Facebook and Twitter this morning. Nothing puts a smile on your face quicker than absolutely adorable little animals, so here ya go – 2 videos to brighten your Monday! *You’ll have to click the links because, sadly, I’m not tech savvy and despite spending a good hour trying to figure it out, I couldn’t get the videos to come up in my post. :p

Baby Hedgehog. Nuf said.

Turbo Roo – The 2-Legged Chihuahua

Isn’t this little guy just the cutest?!?! Brandon says it’s mean that they named him Turbo since he can’t move very fast, but I think it’s an adorable name for him! I found this vid courtesy of HelloGiggles

What perks you up when you get a case of the Mondays?

Friday And A Remodel Update

Happy Friday!!

I have Fridays off work, so I went to Group Power to start off the day.

Before that, though, I needed a little breakfast, so I made smoothies for me and Brandon.

His and hers smoothies!

I used a recipe I adapted from the nutrition plan at work:

1 1/2 c. mixed berries
1/2 banana
Handful of spinach
1 T peanut butter
3/4 scoop vanilla protein powder
Water for consistency

After Power, my plans for the day include grocery shopping and cleaning my house. Exciting stuff! As I’m sitting here in my house, though, I realize I haven’t posted an update on our remodel lately. We’re getting so close to really finishing up the house and being able to move in, so I’ll show you where we are so far. If you missed the first updates of our remodel, you catch catch up here, here, here, here, here, and here. Yes, there are a lot of updates. It’s been a lonnnnnng process.

Most of the exterior of the house is painted and Brandon finished the cover on our upstairs deck just a few weekends ago.

I look forward to the day the exterior is completely finished and I have a presentable yard, not one filled with wood scraps, tools and a scaffold.

The inside’s looking lovely with it’s paint too.

We chose Behr “Gray Squirrel” for the main wall color and “Blue-Gray Slate” for an accent color.

The light in the dining area is up – a cool cork shade that Brandon found on Overstock. We’ll have a few smaller pendant versions above our kitchen island.

We have all the interior doors…. Well, inside, but not installed. Brandon finds most of our doors… Maybe even all of them; I don’t pay the best of attention… at Woodcrafters here in town.

My favorite part so far is the chandelier Brandon just hung in or walk in closet. Ikea, you’re the best! Gorgeous light for a great price. You can find it on their website here.

This mess is what will one day be my relaxing soaking tub with jets… Ahhh!! Me, a book, a glass of wine… Maybe in a year or two. Okay, it probably won’t be that long.

Lucy’s even made herself at home already. She follows Brandon around while he’s up there working – it’s pretty adorable.

That’s the update so far! I have my fingers tightly crossed for moving in before Christmas so I can decorate, but reality says I should be happy with Valentine’s Day. We shall see. I’ve learned that, with construction, things are never on time.

What are your plans for the weekend??

Moving With EveryMove

I work out for several reasons. I workout to ward off the dreaded “muffin top,” so I can eat the occasional cookie (okay, okay, batch of cookies) without feeling guilty, because it makes me feel bad@$$, because it gives me energy, and because my family has a history of obesity that I don’t intend to follow.

But, when my bed is cozy, it’s raining outside or I just feel lazy, knowing all those great reasons for working out isn’t enough to get my butt out the door. Sometimes, I need to bribe myself. That’s where the app, EveryMove, comes in. EveryMove rewards you for working out! And it’s free. Um, sign me up!

The app lets you choose rewards to work towards, from discounts on Chia Warrior products to donations towards great causes, like the Make-A-Wish foundation. To be honest, most of the rewards aren’t things I would typically buy, so I haven’t used any of the discount rewards. I do like being able to earn donations to a good cause, though. Most of the time, I’m gonna workout anyway, so I might as well support a good cause while I’m at it.

With EveryMove, you can also compete against your friends. There’s a leaderboard that shows where you and your friends are in comparison to one another. Gotta say, didn’t realize I was so competitive until I got this app. I get on there after a Group Power class that leaves me unable to wash my hair in the shower (ouch, shoulders) and I’m still in 17th place?? What’s a girl gotta do to get in the top 3? Sometimes, just knowing that my position on the leaderboard is in jeopardy if I don’t work out is enough to get me to the gym. Whatever works.

The thing I like most about EveryMove is that it connects to all my tracking devices to give me points for my workout. I don’t have to record my run on MapMyFitness, then put it in EveryMove too. They all sync up! Anddddd it makes me really want to get a Garmin or some sort of steps-tracking device because I’m pretty sure that’s how everyone else is getting so many darn points! (Well, hello again competitive side.)

You can really get points for almost any activity. Gardening (prob the only thing that will make me garden), yoga, or my personal favorite way to #sweatpink, cycling! Oh, and running … And Group Centergy… Okay, so I have a lot of ways I like to stay active, and EveryMove counts them all. If an activity isn’t on EveryMove, it’s probably that they just haven’t had a chance to add it yet. There are hundreds of activities that count for points, so there’s really no reason not to be active!

Have you ever used EveryMove?

Do you use apps to motivate you to live a healthy lifestyle? I also love Plant Nanny – you water a virtual plant to track your water intake. If you don’t drink enough, it dies. Nothing like the life of a fake plant hanging in the balance to get me to guzzle some H2O.

I posted this on behalf of Fit Approach and EveryMove. But I got the app for free, so there’s really no reason to lie about it – all opinions are mine and completely honest. 🙂

You can download EveryMove on your iPhone here or on your Android here.
