What About Whitney?

I started this blog a few years back, but eventually ran out of brilliant things to say (shocking, I know). However, since I’ve stopped updating, my mom and aunt many fans have risen up in complaint. So I’m back because I’m bored by popular demand with, hopefully, a few entertaining, if not brilliant, things to say.

I’m a work in progress. Every day I work to become a better wife, daughter, sister, friend, runner, cook, and an overall better person. This blog is just a little taste of what that process looks like for me, and how laughter and a LOTTA coffee get me through!

My husband, Brandon, and I met at a college group at our church. After watching me turn down 2 other guys who asked me out (trust me, a once in a blue moon occurance), Brandon bravely approached me and asked if I’d like to go to dinner. I said, “yes,” and the rest is history! We were married 4 years later, in October 2011, and we’re now in the process of remodeling our first home. At the moment, we live in a 400-some-odd square foot daylight basement under what will eventually be a beautiful 2-story home. It’s been an, um, adventure starting off our marriage in a tiny studio-style basement with next to no closet space and a grand total of 2 feet of kitchen counter space. We’ve managed not to strangle each other so far, so I’d say we’re doing pretty well.

Brandon is a paintballer, handyman, and awesome real estate agent. He’s also the brains and creativity behind our home. Shortly before we were married, he purchased a single story foreclosure with a small basement that had been damaged by months of unattended water leaks. What I saw as, well.. a bit of a dump.. and a WHOLE lotta work, he saw as a the framework for a beautiful home. SO he took a sledge hammer to it one night when he was bored and it’s been a work in progress ever since! Below is our home. The top photo is what it looked like when Brandon bought it and the bottom photo is Brandon’s Google Sketchup model of what our home will look like when we’re finished remodeling.

He looks like that in pretty much every picture … See?? He’s excited to be laying brick!!

Brandon is also the creativity behind anything we eat that isn’t a taco or frozen pizza. He is a wonderful and very creative cook. He even spent a few years catering. I, however, do NOT cook. During our first month of marriage, I managed to burn a dinner of grilled cheese and tomato soup… Not really sure how you burn soup, but I did it! I also have learned to open windows and turn off the smoke detector when I cook because I inevitably create a nice cloud of smoke any time I do attempt to cook. It’s not that I can’t cook, I suppose. I just don’t enjoy it. BUT my New Years resolution was to cook more often, so I’m working on it.  I’ve also been trying to eat cleaner and avoid fast food, so that is my encouragement to learn to cook healthy, balanced meals. So far, my specialty is Mexican. I can come up with a billion ways to mix beans, bell peppers, cheese, salsa and either tortillas or quinoa! Like I said…work in progress. I do love to bake, so I’m not a total failure in the kitchen. Baked goods are just so much more fun to eat than real food!! I mean, seriously, who can turn down a warm chocolate chip cookie or brownies fresh out of the oven?? No one! And if you can, you’re not human.

Another piece of my life you’ll notice a lot on this blog is fitness. I work at a gym and I teach Cardio30 (a 30 minute cycling class) and Group Centergy (a blend of yoga and Pilates).  I also am somewhat of a runner. I say somewhat because I don’t really enjoy running per se, but I do enjoy races due to the free t-shirts, food at the end, and medals. So I run mostly just run to train for whatever race I have coming up. Over the last few years, I’ve run several 5ks, an 8k, a 15k and a half marathon.  My dad is my best running buddy. He’s way faster than I am so we don’t run together, but we do participate in races together. The longer distances are a struggle for me, but that doesn’t stop me from trying. I firmly believe that you only fail by not trying. As long as I am doing my best, I have succeeded.

ET doesn’t always teach class with me, but he’s been known to make an appearance.

Me and my running buddy… AKA Dad

I hope you enjoy my little slice of the world wide web!
